2 Tips For Keeping A Straight Smile Aligned

You come in for your final orthodontic treatment visit, revealing a beautifully aligned grin! The day has finally come and you take one look at your smile in the mirror and cannot believe how lovely it looks. While this is absolutely wonderful and the moment you’ve been waiting for, you may wonder if there’s a way to keep this alignment intact. Will it stay this way forever no matter what? Or, do you need to do something special? While you do need to remain mindful of a couple details, you’ll be pleased to learn they’re not too challenging to accomplish.

#1: Follow Our Instructions (Forever!)

Every single patient who receives orthodontic treatment from us to achieve an aligned smile needs to remember to follow our instructions exactly. This will usually mean that you’ll need to receive and wear a retainer to keep your alignment as it is. That doesn’t mean wearing it sometimes. Or for just a few weeks. It means wearing it consistently, precisely as we have instructed, and for as long as we instruct. You may be working to keep your smile aligned for the rest of your life (but it’s not going to require much!).

#2: Replace Missing Teeth

Let’s say you’re on track with keeping your smile aligned after your orthodontic treatment. However, something happens and you end up experiencing tooth loss. Whether it’s one tooth or multiple, it’s very important that you address the issue immediately. Replacing the teeth will allow you to preserve your alignment. Spaces left open will give remaining teeth room to move, which can undo the work you’ve received, leaving you with a new type of misalignment. All it takes is following up with us, so we may keep your smile on track.
