Canker Sores: Don’t Worry!

One second, your smile feels completely fine. The next, you wonder what on earth is happening. You scurry over to the mirror, take a look at the lining of your mouth, and you see what appears to be an ulcer. What’s it doing there, how can you make it go away, and what is it, you might think to yourself? Now is a good time to learn a bit more about canker sores. When you have a better understanding of this common sore, you can more easily help it heal without worrying!

Who Do They Happen To?

They can happen to anyone. They can happen if you’re a kid or if you’re an adult or anyone in between. As a result, you don’t really need to ask yourself if you’ve done something wrong or why this is happening to you. There’s no solid answer just yet. It’s thought that maybe small cuts or even stress may play a role in the development of canker sores.

What Are They Like?

If you are seeing or feeling a canker sore, it’s going to be something like this:

  • It will be inside of your mouth
  • It’s an ulcer
  • The entire center is a whitish or yellow-ish color
  • The sore may be surrounded by a red halo
  • It may feel very sore and uncomfortable

What Should I Do At Home?

At home, it’s easy to care for a canker sore. You should continue your dental hygiene as usual, being careful to avoid contact with the sore when you can. Throughout the day, rinsing your mouth with salt water will help. It’s really very simple.

When Should I Call You?

Unless you don’t notice that the sore is diminishing in size and discomfort within about seven days, you don’t need to call. If the sore persists or worsens (or is making you anxious or is very painful), please call us!
