Halloween: 3 Tips For Your Children’s Smiles!

In case you hadn’t noticed (of course you did!), Halloween is headed for us and it’s coming up quick! While you may have already spent several years figuring out your own habits and limits when it comes to snacking on candy and protecting your teeth, that doesn’t mean you’ve got it all figured out for your kiddos. Since they will be more than happy to sit and consume an entire holiday bucket filled to the brim with treats, you will likely be able to make some very good use of a few children’s smile tips!

Tip #1: Lay Out A Game Plan

If you come up with a plan ahead of time, your kids will know what to expect. What are you comfortable with, so you can keep their oral health safe? Generally speaking, we suggest the following children’s smile suggestions:

  • Sort through their candy before you hand it back to them
  • Allow them to eat a specified number of candies per sitting
  • Permit just one or two candy-eating sessions every day (it’s best to let them eat the candy as dessert with meals)
  • Designate a no-candy-after-a-particular-time rule, too

Tip #2: Don’t Forget About Hygiene

No matter your approach, unless you ban sugar from your house, your kids’ teeth are going to be covered in sugar when they chow down on candy! So, our very helpful children’s smiles tip is: Rely on dental hygiene to protect their oral health along the way. Once they’ve finished their candy, make sure they follow it up either by drinking some water or simply by rinsing with water. Then, let those teeth rest for about 30 minutes, while their mouths return to a less acidic state. After this waiting period is over, it’s time to brush!

Tip #3: Remove The Dangerous Candies

Hard candies keep teeth covered in sugar without stop until they’re gone (and they’re a choking hazard)! Skip these if you can (and anything extremely hard or anything very chewy).
