Brushing Your Teeth: Where You’re Going Wrong

If you’ve been thinking that all brushing is equally effective, no matter the details, then it is high time for a quick refresh! As it happens, there are some ways you might be going wrong (that are quite common) that can make for less successful care. Start off with some tips and then let us offer more significant help during your next dental checkup and cleaning!

You’re Going Way Too Hard

Brush too hard and you may find that when you come in for your dental checkup and cleaning, we notice gum recession or damage to your enamel. Always brush with gentle motions. It’s that easy.

You’re Forgetting Certain Areas

When you come in to see us for your dental checkups and cleanings, we can tell if there are areas that you’re forgetting to clean. You may not even realize that you need to clean everything! Let’s break it all down for you:

  • Every single part of each tooth that is exposed enough for toothbrush bristles to clean it must be brushed!
  • You need to clean the facial side of your teeth (that faces your cheeks/lips), the lingual side (that faces your tongue), the chewing surfaces (that face one another when you bite), and behind back teeth. What you cannot address with your brush, you will cleanse with your floss.

You’re Rushing

There are some things that happen when you rush through dental hygiene that will yield poor results instead of good. First, even if you think that you’re being quite detail-oriented and that time is not an influential factor, it is. You need two minutes. Otherwise, you unintentionally skip certain areas or your brush never makes contact with areas of plaque, leaving you much more susceptible to problems related to hygiene (think cavities or gingivitis). Start out by setting a timer!
